Mark Millar Says Emerald Fennell Wrote The Most Recent Draft Of 'Nemesis'

If you don’t know the name Mark Millar yet, you probably are at least familiar with his work. The comic book writer has co-created some of the most well-known non-Marvel/DC comic book franchises over the past couple of decades, having spawned “Kick-Ass,” “The Kingsman,” “Wanted,” and the recent “Jupiter’s Legacy.” And it appears that in addition to some of the other films and TV series he has on the slate, a project that hasn’t had an update in years, “Nemesis,” just took a major step towards getting made.

According to an interview with Forbidden Planet, Millar talked about the film version of “Nemesis,” which is based on a comic book story of the same name that he co-created with artist Steve McNiven. Millar revealed that the planned film is not only still in development over at Warner Bros. but apparently, the latest draft of the script was written by none other than Oscar-winning writer Emerald Fennell.

Fennell is probably best known for her most recent project, “Promising Young Woman,” which earned her the recent Oscar win. She’s also responsible for being the head writer for “Killing Eve” Season 2 and is set to draft a script for DC’s “Zatanna” superhero film. But even though she’s attached to “Zatanna,” “Nemesis” is a superhero story that is completely different.

“Nemesis” poses the basic, but interesting question — what if Bruce Wayne didn’t become Batman and instead became The Joker? The comic follows a wealthy sociopath that becomes the world’s greatest villain as a way to cure his boredom. The film has actually been in development for more than a decade with Tony Scott originally attached to direct. After his passing, the film moved to Joe Carnahan, who was supposed to bring it to the big screen. It’s unclear if the studio would still like to keep Carnahan aboard or if Fennell’s version of the script is being set up with a new director in mind.

Either way, for those who were hoping to see more Mark Millar mayhem on screen, it appears that “Nemesis” is moving ahead still.
