No other film caused as big a sensation this year as “Top Gun: Maverick.” No other movie made as much money either, with Joseph Kosinski‘s film making $1.478 billion at the worldwide box office. Time will tell if James Cameron‘s “Avatar: The Way Of Water” overtakes “Maverick” on both fronts, but there’s one thing that film won’t do: it won’t be the National Board Of Review‘s Best Film of 2022.

NBR released its annual film awards list today, and “Top Gun: Maverick” came in as the year’s best movie. Other notable winners include Best Actor for Colin Farrell for his performance in “The Banshees Of Inisherin,” who won the same honor from the New York Film Critics Circle earlier this month. In addition, Michelle Yeoh won NBR’s Best Actress as laundromat owner and multiverse explorer Evelyn in “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” In the supporting acting categories, Brandon Gleeson won for “The Banshees Of Inisherin” and Janelle Monáe for the “Knives Out” sequel, “Glass Onion.” These accolades don’t usually translate to guaranteed wins at the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but it doesn’t hurt their case either.
Steven Spielberg picked up his second career NBR win for Best Director for “The Fabelmans.” The last director who won NBR’s Best Director honor to win the same at the Oscars was Martin Scorsese for “The Departed.” Don’t expect Spielberg to do the same this year. Charlotte Wells won Best Directorial Debut for her critical darling “Aftersun.” Meanwhile, in screenwriting, Martin McDonagh won Best Original Screenplay for “Inisherin,” while Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson, and Ian Stokell won for “All Quiet On The Western Front.” Other notable wins include Claudio Miranda for Cinematography with “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Women Talking” for Best Ensemble. Another note of interest: Todd Field‘s “Tár” wins no awards and doesn’t make NBR’s list of 2022’s top 10 films.
