After its world premiere at TIFF in September, critics praised “Causeway” as a momentous return for actress Jennifer Lawrence. But did Lawrence ever really leave the limelight? Sure, she took a year or so off from acting after her engagement, but that lined up with when COVID-19 effectively shut down the movie business. So, not counting 2020, she’s starred in a film a year since 2017, including last year’s “Don’t Look Up.”

But maybe the buzz about “Causeway” has to do with how good Lawrence’s performance is, reminiscent of the actress’ early turns in “Winter’s Bone” and “The Silver Linings Playbook.” In other words, the upcoming Apple TV+ feature film isn’t “Passengers” or “X-Men: Apocalypse” and showcases Lawrence at the height of her talents.
In the film, Lawrence stars as Lynsey, a military engineer who returns home from Afghanistan with a debilitating brain injury she sustained after an IED explosion. During her slow recovery process, she meets Brian Tyree Henry‘s James, who has his own traumatic history. Together, the two damaged souls develop a friendship that allows them to come to terms with their troubled pasts.
Alongside Lawrence and Henry, “Causeway” also stars Linda Emond, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jayne Houdyshell, and Russell Harvard. Joshua Hull, Fred Weller, Sean Carvajal, Will Pullen, and Neal Huff round out the main cast.
“Causeway” marks Lila Neugebauer‘s feature film debut. She directs a script co-written by Elizabeth Sanders, Luke Goebel, and the novelist Otessa Moshfegh. Alex Somers composes music for the film.
The Playlist’s review of “Causeway” out of TIFF calls it “a superb second coming” for Jennifer Lawrence as an actress. But how will the film connect with audiences? Find out tomorrow when “Causeway” hits Apple TV+ exclusively. The film also has an ongoing limited theatrical release, which started on October 28. Watch a new trailer for the film below.
