New Pics From 'Take This Waltz' Plus Expansion Release Dates, See When It Will Hit Your Town

nullIn case we haven't made it pretty clear already, "Take This Waltz" is one of the best films of 2012 thus far. We've been blowing the trumpet pretty hard for the film, and that's because it's the kind of low-key, smart picture that needs to be championed, so excuse us if we're just going to make a bit more noise.

Written and directed by Sarah Polley and starring Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams, Luke Kirby and Sarah Silverman, the film centers on a young woman whose marriage becomes threatened emotionally by the arrival of an attractive man who lives across the street. He seems like an escape from her relationship which has since moved on from the excited early days of young love and settled into a comfortable and predictable routine. Polley uses the concept as a springboard for a remarkably observant film that incisively tackles, in essence, how easy it is to fall in love and how hard it is to maintain. It says something about the maturity it requires to be faithful; to not chase a new experience at the expense that is much deeper and richer than you might think.

Shot in Toronto during the summer, the film uses the humid, sweat-soaked, long days to great effect visually and tonally, and the performances across the board are strong (Rogen really shows some great range here, Silverman is fantastic in a supporting role and Williams, as usual, is outstanding). Yes, it's a bit messy and maybe a bit flawed, but it's raw and real in the way movies rarely are. Long story short: go see it. The film is currently availabe on VOD, but is rolling out across the country over the next few weeks.
