“Poor Things”
Greek weird-wave filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos reunites with Emma Stone—following their “The Favorite” collaboration—for another extraordinary and odd tale. Described as a punk-like update to the story of Frankenstein, “Poor Things” is the story of a young woman who dies and is brought back to life by a wacky scientist in an alternative 19th Century—the film also Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Ramy Youssef, among others.
“May December”
“Carol” filmmaker Todd Haynes returns with Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore for a drama about controversy and fame, excavating a painful past and age-gap relationships that make people uncomfortable. Portman plays a TV star preparing for the role of Gracie (Moore), half of a notorious tabloid relationship that’s now part of the distant past. But as she digs into the past, the present gets complicated for this couple, including Charles Melton.
“The Zone of Interest”
Examining the banality of evil, written and directed by Jonathan Glazer and acclaimed at Cannes, the WWII-set drama is based on the novel of the same name and follows the officer in charge at Auschwitz and his wife as they strive to build their dream life in a house next to one of the concentration camps. The film stars Sandra Huller and Christian Friedel.
“Green Border”
Having its U.S. Premiere at NYFF, this drama from director Agnieszka Holland follows a Syrian family who leaves the violence of their country. Hoping to cross into Poland and continue onto a safe haven, they get caught in political turmoil. Holland co-wrote the film alongside Maciej Pisuk and Gabriela Łazarkiewicz-Sieczko. “Green Border” stars Jalal Altawil, Maja Ostaszewska, Behi Djanati Atai, Mohamad Al Rashi , Dalia Naous, and Tomasz Włosok.
