Nomadland, Minari And Mank Top 2021 Oscars Nominations

Two months later than usual, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 93rd Oscars. The honorees were revealed by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas in a virtual broadcast which had actually become the norm for The Academy even before the pandemic began a little over a year ago. As always, AMPAS members provided a number of surprises for Oscar followers around the globe.

“Mank” led all films with 10 nominations. Six filmed earned six nods including “The Father,” “Minari,” Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Promising Young Woman.” All those films earned Best Picture nominations along with “Sound of Metal.” In theory, a Best Picture nominee needs nominations in the acting, writing, directing, and editing branches to win. Only “Nomadland” and “Promising Young Woman” achieved that this year.

History was made in a number of categories. For the first time ever, two women were nominated for Best Director, Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” and Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman.” Also, for the first time, two African-American women were nominated at the same time in the Best Actress category, Viola Davis for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Andra Day for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”
