Pedro Almodovar Renames ‘Silencio’ To Avoid Confusion With Martin Scorsese’s ‘Silence’

JulietaTwo great directors, one movie title. It could’ve been an epic showdown between two cinematic titans, but in the end, Pedro Almodovar has graciously conceded to Martin Scorsese, allowing the latter to hang onto "Silence" for the name of his upcoming movie. And in the process, Almodovar has revealed the new name for his previously titled "Silencio."

The director has revealed his next film will be titled "Julieta," after the lead character in the film, and in a statement released to press (via THR) revealed how he came to a decision:

When we began with preproduction I found out that Martin Scorsese was going to shoot a film with the same title, but I didn’t mind because I thought that I would use the Spanish title, which sounds much different, in the markets. Scorcese and I have finished shooting our respective films and we know that we will coincide in theaters around the world next year around the same time. Additionally, the novel the film is based on by Shusaku Endo will be rereleased. I think it’s too many silences at the same time and I prefer to avoid future errors.

Sounds about right. As for the movie, Emma Suarez and Adriana Ugarte lead the drama which tracks the tumultuous life of Juliet across thirty years, from 1985 to 2015. Inma Cuesta, Rossy de Palma, Nathalie Pozo, Pilar Castro, Dario Grandinetti, Daniel Grao, Joaquin Notario, and Blanca Pares round out the supporting cast, and while nothing is official, this pretty much a certainty for a Cannes Film Festival premiere.
