Sure, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson has a new film coming Friday, “Mortal Engines,” which he co-wrote and produced. But considering the less-than-stellar early reviews, and the absolute bonkers box office competition facing the sci-fi/fantasy film, many are already looking past “Mortal Engines” and focusing on future Jackson projects. Namely, that “Lord of the Rings” TV show and “Tintin 2.”
During a recent interview we conducted with Jackson, we asked about those projects, to see if there were any updates on the status of the filmmaker’s involvement.
You may remember that when Amazon announced the $1 billion “Lord of the Rings” TV series, Jackson had said that he wouldn’t be involved in the production. This was later amended to include that Amazon was hoping to discuss a possibility of collaboration in the future. However, as of now, the truth is that Jackson is still not sure whether or not he’ll be involved in the series, in any capacity.
“I’ve been approached to [help with ‘Lord of the Rings’], but there’s nothing for me to do until they have scripts. And it was never an option for us to do scripts because we were busy with all these other films,” said the filmmaker.
He continued, “My philosophy is I’d love to help them in some way if I can. And if I can’t help them, I look forward to seeing it.”
Obviously, considering the award-winning work Jackson and Co. did with the ‘Rings’ films, fans are hoping that Amazon utilizes the filmmaker in any way they can, as he is a bonafide expert. But it seems as if the time hasn’t come yet.
Another project that seems to be talked about, but not really confirmed is “Tintin 2.” The sequel to the Steven Spielberg-directed, Peter Jackson-produced animated feature “The Adventures of Tintin” has seemed to be stuck on the shelf in recent years, with barely an update about its progress.

When asked about if “Tintin 2” is still on his radar, Jackson said that he expects to begin work on the project “hopefully in the next year or two.” Far from a confirmed start date, this is still good news for fans hoping for another animated adventure.
And for those just wanting any sort of Peter Jackson fix, “Mortal Engines” hits theaters December 14 and the documentary that he directed, “They Shall Not Grow Old,” is playing later this month.
