Earlier this year, it appeared that even though the world is seemingly falling apart around us, there was a bit of hope that society may recover when Amazon announced plans for Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover to team up to star in a new TV adaptation of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” Two of the creative minds behind some of the decade’s best TV series (“Fleabag” and “Atlanta,” respectively) combining forces? Yes, please! Alas, 2021 giveth and 2021 taketh away, as one of those two folks has departed the series.
According to Deadline, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has decided to depart the upcoming TV remake of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” over at Amazon. While specifics aren’t known, the report claims that “creative differences” are the basis for the departure. However, it is to be noted that Glover is still attached and Amazon is currently just looking for a new co-star for him.
“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” is inspired by the film of the same name, which stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, about a bored married couple that discovers they are both dueling assassins that have missions to kill each other. Hijinks, and gunfire, ensue. The new series is co-created by Glover alongside Francesca Sloane, who is serving as the series’ showrunner.
The series is apparently still in the writing phase but production is hoping to begin in 2022. Obviously, Waller-Bridge’s departure leaves a huge hole in the cast. However, given Glover’s involvement, the IP nature of the project, and Amazon’s huge bank account, it’s likely that they won’t have much trouble finding a replacement for the actress. Though, it must be said that anyone stepping into Waller-Bridge’s role has big shoes to fill, as people were really excited about the series with her involved.
