When filmmaker Zack Snyder (“Man of Steel“) started a working relationship with Netflix, starting with “Army of The Dead,” it was obvious that he was looking to have the streamer bankroll a bunch of his passion projects that other studios weren’t interested in. One of those projects was a “Star Wars” film pitch to Lucasfilm/Disney that was an attempt to make a Jedi-focused standalone film directly influenced by Akira Kurosawa‘s iconic samurai epic “The Seven Samurai.” Lucasfilm had passed on the idea and that led Snyder to repackage the project as an original with the blessing/financing from Netflix, giving us “Rebel Moon.”
Netflix’s big promotional event, Tudum, is underway this weekend where they showed new footage from “Rebel Moon” including a featurette video (See below). The cast of “Rebel Moon” consists of Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Bae Doona, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins as the voice of Jimmy, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Jena Malone, Fra Fee, Cleopatra Coleman, Alfonso Herrera, Stuart Martin, Staz Nair, Sky Yang, Rhian Rees, E. Duffy, and Charlotte Maggi.
Here is the official logline of the pic via Netflix:
“When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past named Kora to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand.”
Snyder is expected to make more installments within the universe of “Rebel Moon” once he completes “Planet of The Dead,” a sequel to the zombie action pic “Army of The Dead.” There are also talks of further expansion with a video game tie-in expanding the sci-fi property.
“Rebel Moon” will begin streaming on December 22 and is likely getting a short theatrical release as well, just like other high-profile Netflix original films.
