'Snakehead' Trailer: Evan Jackson Leong's TIFF-Bound Crime Thriller Arrives In October

We’ve seen quite a few thrillers about the rise of a lowly criminal through the ranks of the underworld. Most famously, this can be seen in Brian De Palma’s classic, “Scarface.” However, the new film, “Snakehead,” aims to put a different spin on the tried-and-true formula.

As seen in the trailer for “Snakehead,” the film follows the story of a young Asian woman that comes to America in search of the classic American Dream, though she’s not sure exactly what that means. Trying to get by in a new country, she finds herself working for the leader of a crime family in Chinatown and begins her rise in the ranks, leading to the young woman becoming a fearsome, violent force.

The new thriller stars Shuya Chang, Jade Wu, Yacine Djoumbaye, Catherine Jiang, Richie Eng, and Sung Kang. The latter of which is probably best known for his work in the “Fast and Furious” series as the fan-favorite, Han. “Snakehead” is written and directed by Evan Jackson Leong. The filmmaker is probably best known for his documentary work, particularly with “Linsanity.” This new thriller marks his debut in narrative features.

“Snakehead” is set to play at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival before hitting theaters and VOD on October 29. You can watch the new trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

Sister Tse comes to New York through a Snakehead, a human smuggler. She gains favor with the matriarch of the family of crime and she rises the ranks quickly. Soon Tse must reconcile her success with her real reason for coming to America.
