Many moons ago, when we were so much younger and so much more innocent, back in March 2020, when the pandemic first started, Sony Pictures looked like smart trailblazers. They saw the writing on the wall immediately and knew “Tenet” in the summer of 2020 would be a joke: the company wrote off 2020 entirely (someone was talking to Dr. Fauci, it seems) and moved their entire slate to 2021, abandoning 2020 as a write off year and they were right. But now, as we are so much older and wiser in the aging pandemic-months that have ensued, this delicate little push looks a little bit quaint. So yes, break out the dry-erase board again, scrub everything and let’s start over with Sony’s 2021 slate, which by last year’s standards looks totally overly optimistic.

So, four films are changing dates and moving. Sony’s “Cinderella,” starring Camila Cabello, directed by Kay Cannon (“Blockers“), once set for February 5, is now moving to July 16 instead. The studio believes it’s a crowd-pleaser, so the summer could be a great date if theaters are actually open by then.

Next up, “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway,” which vacates its Easter weekend slot like MGM’s “No Time to Die,” and now heading to June 11.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” was supposed to be a big summer tentpole release, but instead of a June 11 premiere, the film will now bow on November 11.

Lastly, “Uncharted,” which took forever to get to the screen, facing myriad delays along the way in development, is also getting a push and one as far back into next year. The Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg-starring action adventurer, based on the PlayStation videogame, will open on February 11, 2022, instead of July 16. Who knows how many other studios will have released wholesale 2021 release date rethinks by the time this story is done.

Perhaps the saving grace of it all. Sony has not yet moved its untitled third “Spider-Man” movie set for December 2021 and rumored to feature practically everyone in the Marvel Universe include Daredevil, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, and Andrew Garfield‘s web-slinger; that is, if those rumors are true.
