Sony's Standalone 'Spider-Man' Movie Will Feature Marvel Characters

Captain America: Civil WarIt’s rare you’ll find two major studios sharing a piece of tentpole property as valuable as Spider-Man, but that’s indeed what’s happening with Marvel and Sony. After the latter delivered two shaky "The Amazing Spider-Man" films that drew criticism from fanboys and lower-than-expected box-office returns, they struck a deal with Marvel which would allow them to share the rights to the webslinger. Thus, the new Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, will be popping up in this summer’s "Captain America: Civil War" for Marvel while getting his own movie for Sony. And it looks like Sony is going to get a few Marvel characters to leap into their picture as well.

Marvel honcho Kevin Feige confirmed that would be happening with EW, saying,  “He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth.”

Let the speculation begin now about which characters from the MCU will appear in that standalone movie. My guess? Marvel is not going to introduce anybody new in another studio’s movie so count that out. I’d probably cross off any high-profile MCU characters as well — you don’t want to take the shine away from Spidey in his own movie. But Peter Parker needing some science help in a scene with Bruce Banner? That seems like something that’s totally reasonable. But who knows? It’s anybody’s guess at this point.

I’m more curious what this will mean from contract point of view. If an actor appears in a Sony movie, does it count toward their multi-picture commitment to Marvel? Does Marvel have to renegotiate the contracts with actors step into a Sony movie? Certainly, Feige has lawyers sorting all that fun stuff out.

The standalone Spider-Man movie will arrive on July 7, 2017. Tell us who you want to see join the webslinger in his movie below.
