Biographies have always been a favorite to pen for the screen. Not only do they provide a plethora of material to be brought to life, but the classic hype of the actors’ transformation in those roles (an Academy favorite aka Oscar potential). And there’s nothing more classic than watching a biopic taken place in the Classical Hollywood era.
Academy Award nominees Steven Coogan (“Philomena,” “The Trip”) and John C. Reilly (“Step Brothers,” “Boogie Nights”) are set to star as the legendary comedic duo, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Recently picked up by Sony Pictures Classics at TIFF, “Stan & Ollie” definitely promises to deliver a tender and funny narrative centered on camaraderie and craftsmanship during the duo’s final tour.
Being comedic and obviously talented actors, there’s no doubt that Coogan and Reilly will bring gratifying performances, so it’s matter of how the narrative plays out. Not to mention, the slapstick in the comedy. Alongside Coogan and Reilly, stars Shirley Henderson and Nina Arianda as the wives of the performing duo, Lucille and Ida.
This biopic is penned by writer Jeff Pope who worked with Coogan on the previously Oscar-nominated screenplay, “Philomena,” which was also a poignant road movie with comedic vibes. It’s directed by Jon S. Baird who did the wild junkie film, “Filth.”
