A coming-of-age story can take many different forms. While people often think of them as zany comedies, there are plenty of coming-of-age dramas that show the hardships of growth. That’s the case with the new film “Sujo.”

As seen in the trailer, “Sujo” tells the story of a teen who was born the son of a cartel gunman. As he grows, he becomes more and more rebellious, eventually joining a cartel of his own. Now, Sujo wants to get away from the violence, but can he truly ever escape?
The cast includes Juan Jesús Varela, Yadira Perez, Alexis Varela, Jairo Hernández, Sandra Lorenzano, Kevin Aguilar, and Karla Garrido. The film is directed by the duo of Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez.
“Sujo” debuts in select theaters on December 6. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
After a cartel gunman from a small Mexican town is murdered, Sujo, his beloved four-year-old son, is left an orphan and in danger. Sujo narrowly escapes death with the help of his aunt who raises him in the isolated countryside amidst hardship, poverty, and the constant peril associated with his identity. When he enters his teens a rebelliousness awakens in him, and like a rite of passage, he joins the local cartel. As a young man, Sujo attempts to make his life anew, away from the violence of his hometown. However, when his father’s legacy catches up with him, he will come face-to-face with what seems to be his destiny.
