Tessa Thompson, Evan Rachel Wood & Alia Shawkat Make Appearances In Beck’s New Video Directed By Dev Hynes

Charles Barfield — Mon, 11 Nov 2019 20:27:05 +0000

Even though MTV has long since abandoned the idea of showing music videos, more and more artists are relying on the art form to help generate streams and purchases. So, with the idea that any video has the potential of going viral, musicians are using any possible upper hand they can to help. Case in point — the new Beck music video for the song “Uneventful Days,” directed by Dev Hynes.

Beck, Billie Eilish, Patti Smith, El-P & More To Appear On New ‘Roma’ Soundtrack (Seriously)

Charles Barfield — Wed, 23 Jan 2019 17:48:24 +0000

Yesterday, “Roma” found itself nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including the coveted Best Picture nomination. However, there’s one Oscar category that didn’t feature “Roma,” and in fact, couldn’t ever feature the film – Best Original Song. You see, unlike “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” or “Black Panther,” Alfonso Cuaron’s film didn’t have a soundtrack at all.

Looks Like Beck Is Cooking Up A Performance Of Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Roma’ Score

Charles Barfield — Tue, 13 Nov 2018 20:27:55 +0000

Grammy Award-winning musical artist Beck appears to be teaming up with Alfonso Cuarón to do…something for the upcoming Netflix film “Roma.”

In a recent tweet, Beck said, “Working off of the paper. Recording orchestrations for the film @ROMACuaron by @alfonsocuaron which will be released soon.” What this exactly means is anyone’s guess, but it seems as if Beck is contributing music for “Roma” in some capacity.

Watch The Edgar Wright Directed Video For Beck’s ‘Colors’ Starring Alison Brie

Rodrigo Perez — Thu, 29 Mar 2018 16:10:18 +0000

Director Edgar Wright’s been having somewhat of a “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” reunion of late. The stars of the that 2010 action comedy romance, Michael Cera and Chris Evans, are currently on Broadway starring in Kenneth Lonergan’s latest play “Lobby Hero” and the “Shaun Of The Dead” filmmaker was there for opening night along with ‘Pilgrim’ star Aubrey Plaza and he’s been promoting the hell out of the play on social media.

Exclusive: Beck Sings “Puttin’ It Down” In Clip From Indie Cult Fave ‘Southlander’

Edward Davis — Mon, 13 Jun 2016 20:21:10 +0000

In the early 2000s, Beck had emerged from the shadow of “Loser,” proving he was no lo-fi, one-hit wonder, and had a palette of songwriting interests that ranged from folk to hip-hop and well beyond. However, his slacker charm continued to endear and found itself as part of the ensemble of the indie flick “Southlander: Diary of a Desperate Musician.” If you missed the cult-classic fave, the good news is that it’s being freshly reissued on DVD and digital platforms, and today we have sneak peek.

Listen: Beck’s ‘Ramona’; Plus All The 35 Songs Featured In ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’; Stream Both Albums

Rodrigo Perez — Tue, 10 Aug 2010 13:26:00 +0000

Alright, you’ve already seen the 38-cue tracklisting for the score to Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” and the 23-song tracklist for the soundtrack, and now we’ve got just a little bit more (though there is plenty of overlap). All the 35 “songs” played within the film (though this doesn’t include the score by Nigel Godrich and members of Broken Social Scene, Dan “The Automator” and more).

Songs featured in the film, but not on the soundtrack — some of which we mentioned a few weeks ago when we did a track-by-track review of the soundtrack — include cuts by The Flying Burrito Brothers, BSS member Brendan Canning, Holy Fuck, Death From Above 1979, Queen, Eddie Cochran and more (some awesome video game references too).

Listen: Title Track From Todd Solondz’s ‘Life During Wartime’ By Devendra Banhart & Beck

Kevin Jagernauth — Thu, 05 Aug 2010 13:36:00 +0000

If you’ve seen Todd Solondz’s latest effort “Life During Wartime,” you may have noticed two variations of the title track song played in the film. One is done acoustically by Shirley Henderson (taking on the role of Joy, once played by Jane Adams in Solondz’s 1998 film, “Happiness”) and a second version plays during the credits, performed this time by Beck and his buddy Devendra Banhart. This version is a bit more upbeat (Banhart’s song “Heard Somebody Say” is also featured in the film) with some subtle electronic beats, but it’s still pretty much a low-key affair.

‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ Score: The Track-By-Track Review

Oliver Lyttelton — Thu, 22 Jul 2010 19:47:00 +0000

First things first; yes, it’s another post on “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.” If you’re not interested in the film, move along, there’s nothing for you here. We have been writing about the film and its soundtrack a lot recently, but The Playlist is a site that’s always had a special interest in the place where music and movies meet, and, as one commenter astutely pointed out earlier, few films in recent years have made finished movie, score and pop soundtrack as inseparable as Edgar Wright’s new one.

‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ Deluxe Edition Soundtrack Features Three Bonus Beck-Sung Sex Bob-Omb Tunes

Kevin Jagernauth — Tue, 20 Jul 2010 15:01:00 +0000

While the official soundtrack details for “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” have already been revealed — and we’ve given it a track-by-track review — there is still a whole bunch of music that is not represented on the upcoming release. Director Edgar Wright tweeted a few months ago that we might get a two-volume affair which would potentially included the confirmed contributions by the likes of Cornelius, Dan ‘The Automator’ Nakamura and Kid Koala, not to mention the staggering 21 songs Beck penned for the film.

Beck Wrote 21 Songs For ‘Scott Pilgrim’; Brian O’Malley Initially Wanted Times New Viking To Pen Songs For Sex Bob-Omb

Kevin Jagernauth — Fri, 16 Jul 2010 15:10:00 +0000

Throughout our track-by-track review, when talking about the songs by Sex Bob-Omb, the fictional band fronted by Scott Pilgrim in the forthcoming “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” we noted the song’s lo-fi, grimy, punk aesthetic. Well it appears that Beck, tapped to write the tunes that the band would perform in the film, had a great reference point to work from.

Speaking with actor Michael Cera and comic writer Bryan O’Malley, the LA Times reports that, initially, O’Malley was championing Matador Records’ Midwest punkers Times New Viking to write the songs for Sex Bob-Omb.

‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ Soundtrack: The Track-By-Track Review

Rodrigo Perez — Thu, 08 Jul 2010 14:35:00 +0000

“Music is such an integral part of the Scott Pilgrim books that myself and Nigel [Godrich] have been working on the soundtrack for nearly two years,” director Edgar Wright says in the press release of the “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” soundtrack and it shows as the 19-track album is definitely one of the more engaging and interesting soundtrack albums we’ve listened to in quite some time.

The soundtrack details have already been revealed, but we just received the new album, produced by Godrich (Beck, Air, Radiohead) and featuring original songs by Beck, Broken Social Scene and Metric and it’s so damn good, we thought we’d do a track by track review and breakdown for the music heads out there.

‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ Soundtrack Revealed, Features 5 New Beck Songs, Frank Black, Plumtree, Metric, T. Rex & More

Oliver Lyttelton — Mon, 21 Jun 2010 16:56:00 +0000

With a couple of months to go until its release, and the excitement hitting fever pitch after the excellent international trailer hit last week, it seems like a good time for Universal to reveal the soundtrack for “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.” We’ve revealed bits and pieces of the bands likely to be featured in the film; Beck, Metric and Broken Social Scene are all set to provide music for some of the bands featured within the plot, and frequent Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich has composed the score.

First Listen: ‘Twilight: Eclipse’ Soundtrack (Aka The First & Last Time Your Mom Will Ever Listen To Battles)

Oliver Lyttelton — Thu, 03 Jun 2010 16:29:00 +0000

We’re less than a month away from the release of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” much to the excitement of your little sister and mom, and following the release of the lead single from the soundtrack, Muse’s “Neutron Star Collision,” the soundtrack, which hits stores next Tuesday, is now available for pre-order on the record’s official site.

The whole album was streaming on the same site, but now seems to have been taken down (probably because tech-savvy listeners ripped the songs and they are now all over YouTube).

‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ May Be A Two-Volume Soundtrack

Rodrigo Perez — Thu, 20 May 2010 13:29:00 +0000

At this point, considering the swarm of talent he has amassed, and the cornucopia of talent he keeps hinting at, the fact that Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” soundtrack may be released as a double album or two discs, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Wright twittered about the potential two-disc soundtrack because surely he has a surfeit of material to choose from (he also blogged about a recent scoring session, but it doesn’t reveal any faces we recognise).

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Soundtrack Features Muse, Beck, Vampire Weekend & More

Kevin Jagernauth — Wed, 12 May 2010 18:30:00 +0000

As much as the day-long, roll-out announcement for the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack is hyper annoying, lame and sure to fatigue the very people who want to write about the release (not to mention a cheap way of milking promotion), the music is frankly the only thing that keeps us sort of mildly interested in the vampire franchise.

Even though the soundtracks are basically “That’s What I Call Indie Rock” greatest hits compilations for Wal-Mart, Alexandra Patsavas and her team at Chop Shop have managed to wrangle some great exclusive tracks for the series, with Thom Yorke’s “Hearing Damage” and Lykke Li’s “Possibility” from “Twilight: New Moon” being particular standouts.

‘Repo Men’ Soundtrack Features Beck, RZA, UNKLE & More

Kevin Jagernauth — Fri, 19 Mar 2010 21:50:00 +0000

Even if the film isn’t all that great, the soundtrack to “Repo Men” has some serious pedigree.

The twelve song set leans heavily on a mix of hip hop, electronic music and alt rock — and sometimes all three at once. Wu-Tang soulmates Method Man and RZA contribute some tracks, while UNKLE, Beck and alt rockers Moloko stop by for appearances. Taking things down a notch are Rosemary Clooney and Nina Simone and things get soulful with tracks by Toots & The Maytals and William Bell.

First Listen: Metric Reveal First Song From ‘Scott Pilgrim’ Soundtrack

Oliver Lyttelton — Sun, 28 Feb 2010 18:39:00 +0000

We’re just under six months away from the release of Edgar Wright’s hotly anticipated comic adaptation “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” and the wait becomes less and less bearable as time goes on. Fortunately, the end of February has brought something to stave off the pangs, with a first listen to a song from the soundtrack.

As you may know by now, the film is set around the indie music scene in Toronto, with most of the principal characters playing in bands, and Wright, along with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, has been curating a pretty spectacular line-up of bands, either to write the music for the in-movie bands, or just to appear on the soundtrack.

Angelina Jolie & James Franco To Star In ‘The Golden Suicides’ Penned By Gus Van Sant & Bret Easton Ellis?

Rodrigo Perez — Sat, 27 Feb 2010 14:28:00 +0000

Have Angelina Jolie and James Franco joined “The Golden Suicides”? The project was written by iconic ’80s author Bret Easton Ellis and then later, Portland-based indie filmmaker Gus Van Sant was brought on board to help with the screenplay.

The rumor, if you can even call it that, was first picked up by CinemaTeaser in France. However, it all starts with Easton Ellis himself, who wrote over Twitter, “Keep looking at the script…Angelina and Franco for Theresa and Jeremy?…It doesn’t matter…I wrote it for them anyway…I just spaced…”

As Premiere speculates, is Easton Ellis hinting at something he knows is in the works?

Dan The Automator Joins The Soundtrack Cast Of ‘Scott Pilgrim’; Edgar Wright Reveals More Details Which Reveals More Plot

British film director Edgar Wright was on BB6’s A Month of Matinees program this weekend (pre-taped) and discussed a few interesting soundtrack details about his upcoming film, “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.”

Most of the details we already know. Months ago we revealed that Beck was contributing to the album’s soundtrack as well as Japanese artist Cornelius. In fact, we already know what modern musicians are making the music for the band’s in the film.

New French ‘Wild Things’ Trailer Features First Listen Of Charlotte Gainsbourg Track, “In The End”

Rodrigo Perez — Mon, 23 Nov 2009 16:12:00 +0000

Interesting. Want a completely tonally different take on Spike Jonze’s “Where The Wild Things Are”?

Last week we reported that singer/actress Charlotte Gainsbourg had been cast for the French version of the film voicing the character of KW (Lauren Ambrose in the original version). Now thanks to a head’s up at our friends at Allocine, we’ve discovered that the French trailer for “Where The Wild Things Are” doesn’t feature the Arcade Fire, but instead, a brand new, and previously unheard track from Charlotte Gainsbourg’s forthcoming new record IRM called, “In The End.”

Just last week we also revealed the album cover and tracklist of IRM and “In The End” is the fourth cut that goes right before the first single, “Heaven Can Wait” which you also heard a few weeks ago.

Exclusive: Charlotte Gainsbourg Voicing KW In French Version Of ‘Wild Things’

Rodrigo Perez — Wed, 18 Nov 2009 21:05:00 +0000

Animated films in the U.S. that are big enough for international releases (most of them really) means international stars voicing the parts original done by American stars. We just revealed that Mathieu Amalric and Isabelle Huppert are doing George Clooney and Meryl Streep’s parts in Wes Anderson’s upcoming animated film, “Fantastic Mr. Fox.”

Now we’ve learned of more French casting, this time for France’s version of Spike Jonze’s “Where The Wild Things Are.” We don’t have the entire cast list yet, but we’ve learned that Charlotte Gainsbourg will be voicing the part of KW, which is done by Lauren Ambrose in the original (who actually replaced Michelle Williams).

Charlotte Gainsbourg’s IRM Album Cover & Tracklist Leaks; Plus New ‘Heaven Can Wait’ Video

Rodrigo Perez — Wed, 18 Nov 2009 19:20:00 +0000

We already revealed two songs from Charlotte Gainsbourg (“Antichrist”)’s third album, IRM, produced and co-written by Beck.

The first single, “Heaven Can Wait” (which is rad), the title track, and we played you the original version of “Le chat du Café des artistes,” a song she covers on the record by Quebecois songwriter Jean-Pierre Ferland.

The album comes out January 26 via Because/Elektra in the U.S., but hits her native France on December 7 and details are already trickling out.

We’ve discussed Charlotte Gainsbourg (“Antichrist”)’s third album, IRM, produced and co-written by Beck a few times now. The album doesn’t come out in the U.S. til January, but hits her native France on December 7.

What’s more the first single, “Heaven Can Wait,” was set to be released in France on October 19 and that must have happened, because the track has leaked and you can hear it below (though one of our friends in France tell us it was leaked via French radio, so it’s completely possible the Oct 19 date was pushed back).
