HBO has found its next playground for extreme wealth, power, and questionable behavior: Miami. The network has given a series order to “The Spread,” a new drama starring and executive produced by Javier Bardem, with “Kingsman” filmmaker Matthew Vaughn set to direct and executive produce.

“Ozark” co-creator Bill Dubuque and Sean Sansiveri will write and executive produce the series, which comes from FIFTH SEASON TV Studio.

There’s no shortage of ideas rattling around inside Florian Zeller’s “Bunker,” a class drama built around wealth, privilege, resentment, and the fantasy of escaping a collapsing world. However, “Bunker” achieves a dual distinction so rare it would be impressive if it weren’t so ignominious. Zeller manages to make a film that is somehow both thuddingly obvious and mired in metaphor.

Seven years after Alma Har’el made her narrative feature debut with “Honey Boy,” her long-awaited follow-up is starting to assemble a pretty formidable cast.

Last month, The Playlist reported that Javier Bardem was circling “Wet,” an original family drama from Har’el that has been compared to HBO’s “Succession” and Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness.” Now, the project is getting significantly hotter as it heads to the Toronto International Film Festival market.

There was no reason to make another polite, faithful version of “Cape Fear.” Thankfully, Creator/Showrunner Nick Antosca had no interest in one.

Apple TV’s “Cape Fear” is sweaty, violent, emotionally ugly, and pitched somewhere between a domestic thriller and a full-blown hyper-violent fever dream. The show takes the basic machinery of the 1962 film and Martin Scorsese’s operatic 1991 remake, pulls it apart, and rebuilds it as a ten-hour nightmare about privilege, resentment, marriage, and the strange gravitational pull of a charismatic monster.

For all the money poured into bunkers by the ultra-wealthy, concrete may be the least important thing holding them together. In Academy Award-winning filmmaker Florian Zeller’s new psychological thriller “Bunker,” an elaborate shelter built to survive the end of the world instead threatens to bring a long marriage crashing down.

The first official clip from the film has arrived courtesy of the Toronto International Film Festival, offering an initial look at Academy Award winners Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz ahead of the film’s North American premiere at TIFF in September.

Raising a daughter in 2026, as women’s rights are being regressed by developed nations around the world and the Neanderthalic “manosphere” continues hoovering up cultural oxygen, is an anxious prospect; raising a son in the same environment is a sobering one. This isn’t a “better or worse” proposition, but a “bad in different ways” proposition, which Nick Antosca and Apple TV’s “Cape Fear” miniseries seems attuned to on a level its predecessors–respectively, J.

Film critics such as this writer can sometimes forget that a filmmaker isn’t just (or even necessarily) someone who thinks, lives, and breathes cinema, the way many critics do; a filmmaker is, first and foremost, someone who makes films. Ideas don’t turn into movies at the click of a finger, and just thinking about all the various practical steps involved in making a movie can be daunting in itself. To go through with actually doing it is unthinkable in the literal sense: it is not something done in the mind, but in the body, every day, with your life.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen has never been shy about conflict. “The Beasts,” “The Realm,” and “Riot Police” all turned personal, political, or institutional pressure into blunt-force drama. With “The Beloved,” the Spanish filmmaker narrows the focus to a father and daughter on a film set, where old wounds resurface under the cover of making movies. Starring Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo, the Cannes competition title has unveiled its first Spanish-language teaser trailer ahead of its May 16, 2026, world premiere on the Croisette.

Puerto Rico’s history has never exactly lacked drama, but René Pérez Joglar is coming at it with the language of big, swaggering cinema: a historical drama pitched as an epic Caribbean western, built around the island’s origins and the violence, mythmaking, and power grabs that shaped them. The film is titled “Porto Rico,” and it marks Bad Bunny’s first leading film role, with Edward Norton, Javier Bardem, and Viggo Mortensen also set to star.

Last week, beloved actor Paul Dano took some cheap shots from Quentin Tarantino as the “Kill Bill” filmmaker, calling his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “There Will Be Blood” opposite Daniel Day-Lewis “weak sauce” and “the worst fucking actor in SAG,” which came off as one of many out-of-touch moments from the director (he’s shared a lot of bad takes over the years) that has led to fellow actors and the online community supporting Dano from Tarantino’s oddball ire.

Filmmaker Joseph Kosinski supercharged and revitalized the summer blockbuster and flyboy action drama in 2022 with the masterful “Top Gun: Maverick,” possibly one of the best thrilling popcorn movies of this century. ‘Maverick’ was the total package: heart, humor, soul, romance, action and dramatic personal stakes. Reteaming with that movie’s writer Ehren Kruger and super producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Kosinski attempts to reach a similar velocity for the propulsive Formula One racing drama—visceral action and bruising emotional poignancy— “F1” starring Brad Pitt.

In the eighth episode of “Rick and Morty,” our two heroes stumble upon a trailer for a bizarre film originating from an alternate dimension. Said film, a pastiche of nearly every genre, went by the highly descriptive “Alien Invasion Tomato Monster Mexican Armada Brothers Who Are Just Regular Brothers Running In A Van From An Asteroid And All Sorts Of Things The Movie” and, like much of the series in which it was housed, was clearly played for both satirical laughs as much as a quick ridiculous jab at films that can’t help but cross that imaginary line into the realm of over the top.

The live-action adaption of the beloved animated classic, “The Little Mermaid” —now over-scrutinized by everyone, especially bigots, in the lead-up to its release— hits high notes musically, but its murky visuals are a problem at times. While it has choppy waters at times, leading lady Halle Bailey, who is on her way to stardom, helps keep this classic together.
