The “Alien” franchise has had a headache-inducing history. Though dozens of scripts were developed over the years, many were completely tossed out, and several films featured last-minute scenes being rewritten on the set during filming. While the first two installments from directors Ridley Scott and James Cameron were massively praised commercial and critical successes, the second half of the Ellen Ripley odyssey gets dicey pretty fast.

“Alien Resurrection,” the fourth and final film starring Sigourney Weaver, was an interesting case because Ripley’s character had been killed in the previous installment, “Alien 3,” by a then-young David Fincher, which was considered a financial and narrative stumble for the franchise.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet can be a master juggler of a filmmaker, letting many different pieces achieve weightlessness while our attention is rapt. When it’s graceful and methodical, it can have the dreamy qualities of “Delicatessen” or “Amelie.” But when the trick doesn’t work, it can be mighty exhausting to follow along with, as with his new Netflix film “Bigbug.” This movie has Jeunet doing “The Jetsons” while ruminating on what a robot uprising might inevitably look like, but that proves to be less exciting than one could ever imagine.

Though it might not have the budget of a “Terminator” film, the upcoming Netflix comedy, “Bigbug,” aims to take on the idea of when robots decide to turn on humans. And even though everything is bright and colorful, the end result is the same—there’s no stopping the robot uprising.

When you see the name Jean-Pierre Jeunet attached to a film, you know that the feature isn’t going to…normal. The filmmaker has made a name for himself creating beautiful films that don’t always play by the typical rules and conventions. And that’s clearly the case with his new film, the Netflix feature, “Bigbug.”

As seen in the teaser for “Bigbug,” the film is a sci-fi comedy where Artificial Intelligence is everywhere, in all aspects of human life.

With thirteen nominations under its belt, “The Shape Of Water” is the current frontrunner to win big on Oscar night. Almost everyone has swooned for Guillermo del Toro‘s lovely blend of fantasy, romance, monster movie, and classical filmmaker, however, there’s one director with a bone to pick.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet has accused del Toro of stealing a scene from his 1991 film “Delicatessen,” and essentially replicating it in “The Shape Of Water.” The sequence in question involves Dominique Pinon and Karin Viard dancing in unison on a bed, while an old musical plays in the background on the television.

Two years after the mammoth success of “Star Wars,” there were a number of sci-fi movies clearly hoping to cash in. Disney attempted to start their own space franchise with “The Black Hole”; the “Star Trek” crew headed to the big screen, as did Buck Rogers; and even James Bond went into orbit with “Moonraker.” But the one that really, truly stuck was “Alien,” a sci-fi horror movie from a little-known commercials director whose first feature film, “The Duellists,” had been critically well-regarded but mostly ignored by the public.
