When you try to gauge your excitement for an upcoming film, you can do so in a number of ways. You can look at the cast and see if that’s enough to get you hyped. Or if there’s no cast, such as the upcoming “Pet Sematary” follow-up (earlier reports call it a prequel), you have to look at the filmography of the new director, Lindsey Beer, and see if it’s strong enough to build your optimism for the new horror film.

When you’re competing with the likes of Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video, there’s really nothing you can do as a streaming service other than offering audiences something they can’t get anywhere else. For Paramount+, right now, that includes the “Star Trek” franchise and a variety of other TV series.

Last night, during a TCA panel, the latest major streaming service to debut (or actually rebrand, as it used to be CBS All Access), Paramount+, laid everything out on the table, debuting news about a ton of high-profile original series, quick access to blockbuster films, and a slew of other goodies. And just like any streaming service worth its salt in 2021, Paramount+ is also betting big on original streaming films, including new entries in the “Paranormal Activity” and “Pet Sematary” franchises.

Made for a more modest $100 million, and more family-friendly than most (though still PG-13), Warner Bros.’ “Shazam!” singlehandedly won the box office this weekend. Striking lightning with $53.4 million domestically and $158 million total worldwide, “Shazam!” bested the competition internationally too, but the numbers certainly aren’t as high as recent box office superhero properties. “Shazam!” put up “Green Lantern”-like numbers and came in 55th on Box Office Mojo’s list of the highest opening superhero films of all time.

As was the case with this month’s television, it’s still the final season of “Game of Thrones” that’s going to steal away much of the conversation in April. But on the film side of things, ‘Thrones’ has some serious competition thanks to a little indie called “Avengers: Endgame” at the end of the month. Marvel Studios dominates the box office on a yearly basis. But, in between the moments where people are waiting in queue online for their tickets and paying repeat visits to the theaters to see their favorite superheroes once again duke it out with Thanos, there are plenty of other features worth seeking out at your local theater.

The final trailer for the upcoming horror film “Pet Sematary” finds itself in an awkward position. Much like the last trailer, the latest clip doesn’t hide one of the most interesting aspects of the film’s plot. However, in showing people this aspect of the film, a major plot point is revealed that would have probably been best kept a secret. That being said, as the filmmaker’s recently said, there’s really no way to hide this part of the film and what we would consider a spoiler isn’t really a major spoiler.

**If you haven’t seen the new trailer for the upcoming “Pet Sematary” remake, consider the below to be spoilers. However, if you were unaware that you should have skipped the trailer (like me), you can read the directors try to explain why it’s not really a spoiler. Enjoy!**

I can’t sit here and say that writing about movies is a tough job. It’s not easy, sure. Writing, in general, isn’t something that everyone is able to do.

Considering how it’s nearly asking for it, how it could have easily been used against it, to re-employ the iconic “sometimes dead is better” line from Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary,” as well as Mary Lambert’s 1989 film adaptation, in the marketing is a bold move. Fortunately, the sleek, well-crafted, if somewhat muted “Pet Sematary” update by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (“Starry Eyes”) nails the tone of one of King’s most sinister tales, creating a bleak depiction of our own mortality and the choices we make in life that will always haunt us.

It’s been interesting to see Austin and the SXSW Festival explode over the years. Not only has film and music grown, but the festival’s become a trailblazer for tech, interactive, comedy, sports, and much more; SXSW just keeps expanding. Throughout it all, however, the festival has shown very-few-to-no growing pains which is astonishing considering all the expansion. Moreover, the film festival committee and programmers haven’t lost sight of what they do and have continued to deliver their eclectic mix of crowd-pleasing, raucous comedies, and mainstream efforts mixed in with under-the-radar, about-to-breakthrough indies, breakout documentaries and so much more.

Despite the abject failure of “The Dark Tower,” The Stephen King-assaince is still in full swing. Every week it feels like either a classic movie based on one of King’s fantastical books is being made or, a beloved novel, not yet adapted to the screen issue is finally being made. Even when the product isn’t a Stephen King adaptation, Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” for example, it tends to be heavily indebted to his work.

For a writer as prolific and varied as Stephen King, it makes sense that not all of his works would be at the same standard of quality as the best of his bibliography, and the same goes for film adaptations of his work. For every “Shawshank Redemption,” “Carrie,” and “The Shining,” you’ll get “Cujo,” “The Mist,” and “Dreamcatcher.” But, in the past few years, film and television adaptations of King’s stories have been of generally consistent quality (barring last year’s maligned “The Dark Tower”), from “It” to “Gerald’s Game” to Hulu’s “Castle Rock.” Now, a new “Pet Sematary,” adapting King’s novel and remaking the 1989 film, enters the fray.

Stephen King film adaptations are all the rage nowadays. Thanks to the insanely popular “It: Chapter 1,” there’s been a bit of a King renaissance in recent months with studios anxiously snatching up everything with the author’s name attached. One of the projects that will hit the big screen soon is another adaptation of the popular King book “Pet Sematary.” And according to a set visit and some new pictures, it looks like fans of the horror author might have another great film on their hands.
