Whit Stillman films tend to arrive on their own clock. Since “Metropolitan” introduced him as American cinema’s great comic anatomist of privileged manners, his career has moved with unusual patience: “Barcelona,” “The Last Days of Disco,” “Damsels in Distress,” and, most recently, 2016’s “Love & Friendship.” Now, a decade later, Stillman is heading back behind the camera with “A Night at Claridge’s,” a wartime drama starring Adam Brody and Laura Carmichael.

Anyone who’s followed the career of Whit Stillman wasn’t surprised to hear that he was adapting the obscure Jane Austen novella “Lady Susan” into his new film “Love & Friendship.” The writer/director established his Austen fandom with his first movie, 1990’s “Metropolitan,” which featured two characters debating the merits of “Mansfield Park” (while they themselves were in the middle of a story about young people and morality that resembled Austen’s book).

The 69th Cannes Film Festival is officially here, so to close out our set of features about it (here’s our Ranking of the 21st Century Palme d’Or Winners, the Best Breakout Films From Un Certain Regard, and 20 Movies Booed At Cannes) we turn our attention to the smaller, but often more genuinely innovative sidebar, the Directors’ Fortnight (known locally as the Quinzaine).

Established in 1969 by the French Directors Guild (and therefore not part of the festival’s Official Selection which reportedly leads to a little friction between the two entities), the parallel festival, held simultaneously with Cannes, has hosted some of the most exciting talents to have shaped modern film culture.

Has there ever been a purer match between author and adapter than Jane Austen and Whit Stillman? Stillman’s first film, 1990’s “Metropolitan,” updated Austen’s explorations of social values and romantic ardor among the upper classes, and even had two characters debate her contemporary relevance. Then, in the second and third parts of his “earnest young yuppies in love” trilogy (1994’s “Barcelona” and 1998’s “The Last Days of Disco”), Stillman continued his consideration of how income, religious faith, and social pressure still play as much a part in guiding romantic decisions as they did in the 1800s.
