Taika Waititi Teaming Up With Jude Law For Hollywood Satire Show ‘The Auteur’ At Showtime

Update: We have a more detail description of what the show may be about.

Everyone’s always interested in knowing what filmmakers choose as their follow-up to Oscar-winning projects, but few ask what filmmakers choose as their follow-up to playing Hitler in a movie. Hot off his Oscar win for best-adapted screenplay, Taika Waititi is in negotiations to helm “The Auteur” at Showtime with Jude Law as the lead actor.

Though no deals are in place yet, Deadline reports that Waititi and Law are in negotiations with Showtime for a show being described as a Hollywood satire through the eyes of an eccentric auteur filmmaker, who would be played by Law. Waititi is expected to direct at last one episode, as well as executive produce.

According to Variety, the show will be based on a graphic novel of the same name published by Oni Press, who also published “Scott Pilgrim.” This is how the novel is described by Oni Press: “Fresh off the biggest bomb in Hollywood history, disgraced and desperate producer Nathan T. Rex enters a downward spiral of drugs and depravity in a quest to resurrect his career and save his soul. Over budget and behind schedule on the latest installment of the horror franchise, PRESIDENTS DAY, T. Rex is backed into a corner by bad publicity, a crap project, and a jerk studio exec, but finds salvation at a strip club by huffing glue, and a chance encounter with cable news.”

So you can expect a real show of the middle finger to the entertainment industry’s tendency to fixate on the creative powers of a single person expected to not only come up with unique stories, but present them in extremely unique ways, oh, and also be personalities in and of themselves – like Waititi himself. It is about time we get a new TV show that’s a satire about the industry, as people are finally starting to forget about “Entourage,” for once.

There’s no start date set as both Law and Waititi are incredibly busy. Law can currently be seen on HBO’s “The New Pope” while he’s also working on those “Fantastic Beasts” movies that are apparently still happening. Meanwhile, Waititi must have superhuman abilities in order to handle all the projects he has on his plate, including a fourth “Thor” movie, his sports comedy film “Next Goal Wins,” directing and producing the “What We Do in the Shadows” TV show, continue to tease us about that “Akira” remake, and also avoid Disney+s attempts to indoctrinate him into accepting a job directing a “Star Wars” movie. Will he manage to do it all? Well, it will certainly make for an interesting season of TV, wouldn’t it?
