'This England' Teaser: Kenneth Branagh Plays Disgraced British Prime Minster Boris Johnson For Director Michael Winterbottom

Although British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation in July and will remain in power until his party chooses a leader, his legacy of incompetence will stick with him for years, if not the rest of his political career. But like Trump, who has received many kinds of satirical treatments— several actors parodying his oafishness on “Saturday Night Live”— and a kind of biopic treatment—Brendon Gleeson portraying the former last guy on “The Comey Rule”— Boris Johnson is getting a kind of biopic treatment in “This England,” starring BAFTA and Academy Award-winning actor/director Kenneth Branagh in the lead role.

Coming to Sky Atlantic on September 21 in the U.K., the series is from acclaimed U.K. director Michael Winterbottom and profiles the early days of the COVID pandemic under Johnson’s premiership. The series was recently sold to 88 territories worldwide by distributor Fremantle but has yet to find a U.S. buyer (the series was initially titled “This Sceptred Isle,” but it looks to have abandoned that title).

“This dramatic behind-the-scenes dramatization of how the government, the scientists, the medical community, and ordinary people around England faced these extraordinary events will fascinate and compel viewers,” said Fremantle International CEO Jens Richter. “We are honored to partner with such a fantastic array of buyers to bring this incredible story to audiences around the world.”

The eclectic and prolific Michael Winterbottom has directed everything under the sun and tackled almost every possible genre. He currently has nearly 50 film, TV, and documentary credits to his name, and three of his films, “Welcome to Sarajevo,” “Wonderland,” and “24 Hour Party People,” all competed in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. He is probably best known at this point for his delightful “The Trip” franchise starring Steven Coogan and Rob Brydon.

The series also stars Ophelia Lovibond, Andrew Buchan, Andrew Buchan, Simon Kunz, and Greta Bellamacina. Watch the new teaser trailer below.
