Provided we get to the end of the year without Donald Trump causing a nuclear armageddon, there is one small sliver to excitement we can take from the world of cinema, which is currently (rightfully) crumbling. There will be a new movie by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Kicking around under the working title “Phantom Thread” for much of the year, it turns out that will be the final name. Focus Features has quietly launched the official site for the picture, which remains the only major awards season release of the year still firmly under lock and key. There are no stills, no trailers, the film isn’t expected to be the surprise movie at the BFI London Film Festival tomorrow and it’s looking unlikely to hit AFI Fest as well. For now, we have just have this synopsis:
Continuing their creative collaboration following 2007’s There Will Be Blood, three-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Phantom Thread from Paul Thomas Anderson. The writer/director will once again explore a distinctive milieu of the 20th century. The new movie is a drama set in the couture world of 1950s London. The story illuminates the life behind the curtain of an uncompromising dressmaker commissioned by royalty and high society.
“Phantom Thread” opens on December 25th.
