Watch: 'After Earth' Promo Video Suggests We'll Still Be Using Facebook In 2066

nullM. Night Shyamalan, Will Smith and Jaden Smith couldn't be bothered to wave to fans at Comic-Con, skipping San Diego entirely on Saturday, while Sony forged ahead, trying to get the geek crowd excited about the next summer's blockbuster, "After Earth." The studio showed off mostly behind-the-scenes footage, which included a clip of the director explaining he's approaching his sci-fi blockbuster as if it were "a documentary about Earth’s future." And certainly, the first promo video for the movie lays out the alternate history the movie will be using.

Starting over 100 years back with the crash of an alien spaceship, moving forward to the present day and then into the future, the promo video lays out the backstory on the Raige family that is central to "After Earth." It also suggests that everyone will still be checking their Facebook timelines in 2066 for news and history. Sorry, Google+. Anyway, the film is set 1,000 years after cataclysmic events force humanity’s escape from Earth to Nova Prime. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash land on a now-unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon, giving him a chance to be a soldier like his father.

Dorky names aside, it's probably the best concept Shyamalan has worked with in years so perhaps it will find him returning to his old form. But if Cypher tells Kitai to "swing away"…."After Earth" opens on June 7, 20123. [via Bleeding Cool]
