Just yesterday we noted that Todd Solondz's latest "Dark Horse," was still without U.S. distribution, but it's still traveling around the world playing various festivals and it recently landed in Poland, where the first trailer for the film has arrived via Bleeding Cool, and it's an odd one.
Though it plays like a straight ahead rom-com, as our review from Venice notes, it's actually a deconstruction of sorts of the man-child comedy, though unfortunately, with less of the teeth and wit we've seen in Solondz's better work. Led by little known charactor actor Jordan Gelber, he plays a thirtysomething man still living with his parents (Christopher Walken and Mia Farrow), who seeks to marry a woman he just met, who is also in a similar state of arrested development (Selma Blair) in an attempt to shed his label as the dark horse of the family. Justin Bartha and Zachary Booth play, respectively, the protagonist’s brother and cousin, while Aasif Mandvi appears as Blair’s ex-boyfriend, and Donna Murphy is Walken’s secretary at the company he runs, where Gelber works.
The tone is certainly distinctly from the wheelhouse of Solondz, and there are some pretty sharp one-liners in there (and Walken's hair is amazing), and a spirited performance from Gelber, but overall this feels like a Bud Light Lime effort from the director. Regardless, we're curious and we hope someone picks this up so we can see it stateside. Watch below.
