Coming out of Sundance with strong reviews, “The Tillman Story” (originally titled “I’m Pat_____Tillman”) was acquired by The Weinstein Company and with the August release date looming, the first trailer for the film has hit the web.
Directed by Amir Bar-Lev (“My Kid Could Paint That”), the film digs into the truth surrounding the death of Pat Tillman, a former professional football player who left a multi-million dollar contract in the NFL to enlist in the Army. The official line surrounding Tillman’s death in Afghanistan was that it was the result of an encounter with hostile forces, while a further investigation soon revealed that friendly fire, caused by confusion in the field, led to his passing. Furthermore, official documents revealed after Tillman’s autopsy showed that he may have been murdered.
It’s a fascinating, controversial story and the trailer doesn’t waste any time in selling the documentary as a breathless thriller. We’re definitely looking forward to this one, but we’re scratching our heads a bit at the August 20th release date. Surely the film deserves a bit better than an end-of-summer release?
