Got a Tip?

Key & Peele Unite With ‘Coraline’ Director For Netflix Animated Film ‘Wendell and Wild’

While the world awaits whatever Jordan Peele has been working on as his follow-up for his feature film debut “Get Out,” the writer/director is busy with other unique and different projects. While we’ve already covered his upcoming HBO series with J.J. Abrams, called “Lovecraft Country,” Deadline is now reporting that Peele is teaming up with his comedy partner Keegan-Michael Key for a new animated film from acclaimed director Henry Selick.

Netflix has just agreed to finance and distribute “Wendell and Wild,” a stop-motion animated film starring Key and Peele as the titular characters. Not much is known about the plot, other than Key and Peele are providing voices for two scheming demon brothers. The film is written by Selick, Peele, and writer Clay McLeod Chapman, based on Selick’s original idea.

For those that aren’t familiar with Selick, then you definitely should be. The director is best known for directing “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Coraline,” and “James and the Giant Peach.” Needless to say, this is the guy to go to for quality stop-motion animation.

As previously mentioned, Jordan Peele is a busy man, with the new addition of “Wendell and Wild” to his already busy production schedule. Peele’s Monkeypaw production company is currently hard at work on the upcoming Spike Lee film, “Black Klansman,” “Lovecraft Country,” and whatever the follow-up to “Get Out” will be called. They are also producing the Tracy Morgan TV series “The Last O.G.” for TBS and a potential reboot of “The Twilight Zone.”

For Netflix, “Wendell and Wild” marks the second stop-motion film they will be producing. Last year, the streaming giant bought the rights to produce an animated film based on Michael Jackson’s pet chimp, Bubbles. The film is being co-directed by “Thor: Ragnarok’sTaika Waititi and “Fantastic Mr. Fox’sMark Gustafson.

No word on a release date for “Wendell and Wild.”
