Zack Snyder Talks Provoking SnyderCut Fans & The Fear Of Getting Sued By Warner Bros. Over The Campaign

Zack Snyder‘s 4-hour behemoth version of “Justice League” was released back in March on HBO Max, and the filmmaker can now focus on promoting his Netflix zombie franchise starter “Army of The Dead,” releasing later this month in both theaters and on streaming.

However, the backstory on ‘Justice League” seemingly never ends, perhaps because the campaign to get the movie released was mired in controversy from toxic fans. While promoting the new zombie flick, Zack revealed to The Sunday Times that he was concerned what the response would be from Warner Bros. after backing the group of fans campaigning both WarnerMedia and AT&T to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. WB did face much harassment from overzealous, and the filmmaker revealed he was worried that the studio might sue or even silence him over supporting the group, a what-if scenario that didn’t come to pass.

“I was more worried the studio would sue me. Do something to silence me,” Snyder admitted about his feared blowback from the studio after his public backing of the Snyder Cut campaign.

Snyder continued to explain his complex relationship with the group that spent a lot of its energy raising funds for suicide prevention, seemingly sidestepping the interviewer’s editorialized comments about the sometimes toxic nature of some of the fans. “Here’s the reality. That fandom raised $750,000 for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. They’ve saved lives. That’s a fact. But on the other hand, was it fun to provoke them? For a clickable thing? Yes. And they were an easy target. But they continue to raise money. There are not a lot of fan communities whose primary objective, other than seeing work of a guy they like, realized their other main thing was to bring awareness to mental health and suicide prevention. For me, it’s kind of hard to be mad at them.”

Ultimately, the Snyder Cut was indeed released, and the filmmaker is now focused on expanding his new “Army of The Dead” into a complete franchise at Netflix with a second film “Army of Thieves” that has already been shot (which Snyder did not direct but is producing) alongside an animated project “Army of The Dead: Lost Vegas” also on the horizon.

Zack Snyder fans don’t seem to be terribly satisfied despite already getting a four-hour cut of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” released on HBO Max. After WarnerMedia‘s Ann Sarnoff talked about moving beyond Zack Snyder’s vision for the DCEU and putting it to bed, fans began a #RestoreTheSnyderverse campaign hoping the company will reinstate Zack’s vision for the DCEU. It feels super doubtful they’ll be as successful with this second attempt, given WarnerMedia’s comments about closing the book on the Snyderverse and moving on, but fans will hold out hope regardless.
