It takes some nerve to make a movie called “Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass” and then build the entire thing around a Kansas hairstylist who is whisked away by a tornado of chaos to Los Angeles to get it on with Jon Hamm. Thankfully, David Wain (“Wet Hot American Summer,” “Role Models”) and Ken Marino (“Wanderlust,” “Children’s Hospital”) have never seemed particularly burdened by good sense.

After years of darker prestige swings and IP fatigue crowding out theatrical comedy, David Wain’s latest feels like a deliberate throwback to the gleefully ridiculous studio comedy Hollywood barely makes anymore. The first trailer for “Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass” leans hard into that anarchic energy too — celebrity satire, absurdist violence, mistaken identities, Italian assassins, and an increasingly deranged hunt through Los Angeles for Jon Hamm playing a heightened version of himself.

Hollywood comedies do not tend to get premises this blunt anymore, but David Wain has never been especially useful as a practitioner of restraint. His new film, “Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass,” arrives this summer with a title that tells you almost everything and a cast that suggests the joke keeps escalating.

Sony Pictures Classics has released a new teaser for the comedy, starring Zoey Deutch as Gail Daughtry, a small-town hairdresser engaged to her devoted high school sweetheart, Tom.

There is probably no filmmaker more naturally suited to turn a ridiculous sex-pass premise into a frantic studio comedy than David Wain, whose best work (“They Came Together,” “Wanderlust”) has always understood that adult humiliation, romantic panic, and total comic overcommitment tend to live in the same zip code. Now, Wain is back with “Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass,” an R-rated Hollywood chase comedy that premiered at Sundance earlier this year and is now headed to theaters this July through Sony Pictures Classics.

The enduring appeal of comedian and filmmaker David Wain lies in his ability to channel the feeling of hanging around the most naturally funny friend in any group. He’s the kind of person whose sense of humor is always on and looking for the next opportunity to land a joke. The difference, of course, is that he can pull from a deep bench of high-profile friends like Elizabeth Banks and Paul Rudd to show up and help sell the vision.

Once a show gets canceled, that’s usually it. Or it used to be that way, but in the age of streaming where content is king, we’ve seen a lot of belated revivals over the years, maybe “Arrested Development” getting resurrected at Netflix being the first major one. Next up in the growing line of revival shows is the long-awaited return of the hit comedy series “Party Down,” which is coming back for a very belated third season on STARZ.

What happens when the definition of success suddenly changes? Two siblings are learning what it means to move on from prominence in “The Other Two.” The comedy series returns for a second season, and this time another character is finding her chance at fame. Now a popular talk show host, Pat’s own rise to stardom is challenging how an entire family feels about being in the spotlight. Alterations to “The Other Two” don’t just stop with storylines.

It seems like a pretty substantial chunk of entertainment news within the last few weeks has been about revivals and reboots of various television series. Whether it’s studios cropping new streaming platforms (I’m looking at you Paramount+) or already-established services doubling down on pre-existing IP (à la the return of “Dexter” on Showtime), the nostalgia-propelled potential of these properties is clearly too lucrative to be dismissed.

It’s perhaps slightly difficult to review, “The Babysitter: Killer Club,” if your trajectory towards the film is like this reviewer’s: being told, and reading through reviews, that the original, “The Babysitter,” was a surprise Halloween treat from Netflix in 2017, retroactively viewing it and discovering that’s not at all the case. Directed by McG, the Costco brand of Michael Bays, “The Babysitter”—which was about a boy in love with his babysitter only to discover she’s part of a Satanic cult— isn’t very good, and ultimately rather juvenile and crude.

The dog days of summer are upon us. With the buffet of films lined up for the next few months, we honestly could use this respite come August. So if you’re feeling a little fatigued by horror movies, remakes, or fandom feuds, we might have a suggestion equivalent to a calming, unweighted saunter through your neighborhood. And for this one, you may be inclined to take your four-legged, furry friend.
