ABC TV's Ben Sherwood Updates Status Of Live Action 'Star Wars' TV Series

Last summer, “Star Wars” fans freaked when at the Television Critics Association August event, network president Channing Dungey said that “hush, hush” “conversations” were happening with Lucasfilm about a potential live action series that would take place in a galaxy far, far away. Would George Lucas‘ scrapped “Star Wars: Underworld” get revived? Would the show connect with the main saga? Well, don’t pass out from asking too many questions, because it seems there’s a bit of cart before the horse going on.

Chatting with THR, Disney/ABC broadcast honcho Ben Sherwood provided a status update on a potential “Star Wars” series, and frankly, it doesn’t sound like it’s happening anytime soon.

“The live-action Star Wars plan rests in the hands of [Walt Disney Studios chairman] Alan Horn, [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy and the great folks at Lucasfilm,” he said. “Somewhere we hope in a galaxy not too far away there will be a television show that will air on one of our networks. But I wouldn’t get anybody’s hopes up too high. They have a lot of movies to make between now and then. We are deep into a very productive relationship with Lucasfilm making [Disney XD‘s] ‘Star Wars Rebels.’ And we are in ongoing conversations with them on what is the next ‘Star Wars‘ animated show.”

And really, that makes sense. With a live-action “Star Wars” movie landing every year, and with plenty of stories being told in that space, there’s no reason for Lucasfilm to rush to the small screen. Like everything they do, I would imagine they are waiting for the right take at the right moment before they move ahead.
