In a sense, we’ve already seen Ben Affleck go gangster this fall in the dumb but fun (but also overly complicated) “The Accountant.” But don’t forget, he’s also gunning for the Oscars with “Live By Night,” and a new image has arrived.

Featuring a big ensemble including Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson and Chris Cooper, and based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, the story revolves around Joe Coughlin (Affleck), the son of a cop who finds himself slipping into a life of organized crime. As he climbs the ladder of the underworld, he journeys from Tampa to Cuba and encounters various dames, lowlifes and more in a tale of revenge and redemption. And for Affleck, the movie is return to the kinds of movies he loves.
“I’ve spent more time on ‘Live by Night’ than I did on my two DC movies combined, and that feels really good,” he told EW. “I have nothing against superhero movies, but I’m nostalgic for the kind of movie that ‘Live by Night’ plays homage to, when that was what constituted a big Hollywood movie. That was why I wanted to spend my time there when I wasn’t wearing a cape.”
“Live By Night” opens on Christmas Day.
