The most recent trailer for “Blade Runner 2049” features a scene at the beginning that kicks the whole thing off between actors Ryan Gosling and Dave Bautista. In the scene, Gosling’s Officer K is sitting in a dark room opposite Bautista’s character, who is cooking food. After a tense exchange of words, a fight breaks out. It’s a good scene and plays really well in the trailer. What people didn’t realize when they first saw it is that scene is actually ripped from the original “Blade Runner.”
Well, that’s not quite true. The scene in question is actually based on an unfilmed storyboard that was almost used in the 1982 movie. In the book “Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner,” author Paul M. Sammon included some storyboards that showed an alternate opening to the film. In that opening, Harrison Ford’s Deckard goes into a home where there is food on the burner. He sits in darkness and surprises the occupant by shooting him in the chest.

These storyboards were eventually animated by a fan, giving them fresh life. After watching the animated storyboards, it’s clear that this was the inspiration for the scene that is included in the upcoming sequel. “Blade Runner” director Ridley Scott has been vocal about how “Blade Runner 2049” will include ideas that didn’t quite make it to the original film, but until now, fans didn’t realize this included unused scenes.
