Got a Tip?

‘Captain Marvel’ Screenwriter Says There’s “A Lot Of Reinvention That Needs To Happen” With The Origin Story

With Brie Larson confirmed as “Captain Marvel” and in light of the actress getting down to doing her research, the all important job of crafting the screenplay is now underway as well. As Marvel‘s first female character to get a standalone movie, expectations will be high, and the task will not only involve bringing a beloved superhero to life, but fitting her into the pre-existing Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s also the matter of pleasing longtime fans of the comic books, which isn’t always easy, so it’ll be interesting to see how they take this news.

Nicole Perelman, who is co-writing “Captain Marvel” with Meg LeFauve, recently spoke with the podcast “Any Time with Vin Forte,” and revealed why the film will not be adapting the story of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel straight from the comics —the character’s backstory may get changed in a big way. The character has endured many changes in her status quo in the comics, was initially named Ms. Marvel and was essentially a female version of a male character called Captain Marvel.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it,” Perelman said. “She’s obviously such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc [in recent comics in the last several years]. But here’s the thing: if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do,” she said.

“There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen,” Perelman continued. “And she’s also her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel films and make sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off, it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”

It sounds like a smart approach, and it seems Perelman and co. want to give Captain Marvel a story that does the character justice, and allows her to stand distinctly even when rolling with the rest of the MCU.
