'Destiny 2' Trailer: Jordan Vogt-Roberts Goes Blockbuster

I don’t play video games, so I didn’t even know there was an original “Destiny,” let alone a “Destiny 2.” But it’s not some snooty aversion to the medium that keeps me away, but the simple fact of hours in a day, and the very real fear that if I get a console I will never see daylight again. However, if anyone is going to convince to get button mashing again (indeed, I did know my way around plenty of game systems back in the day), it’s Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

The director behind one of the more underrated blockbusters this year, “Kong: Skull Island,” has made another splash with a promo for “Destiny 2.” I honestly have no idea what this game is about, but this commercial is pretty badass, with Vogt-Roberts flexing some serious popcorn entertainment muscles and a knack for visual spectacle. It’s impressive stuff, and as someone who plays games himself, this wasn’t just another paycheck gig.

“I was coming off of Kong and I wasn’t looking to take on giant projects in terms of time commitment,” he told Rolling Stone about signing up for the commercial. “It became this perfect storm.”

“As a gamer, I’m so sensitive to having this thing we love and then someone trying to market it to everyone,” he added. “It’s a tricky task.”

Well, he was given the creative room to really sizzle, and the results are pretty great. “Destiny 2” arrives on September 6th.
