There’s going to be no shortage of blockbuster sound and fury in the weeks ahead, but if you’re looking for something off the beaten path, you’ll want to track down the utterly unique “A Ghost Story.” David Lowery‘s low-key new movie made big waves at Sundance earlier this year, and while it stars the magnetic duo of Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck (who previously worked with the director on “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints“), another key ingredient is the score from Daniel Hart.
The composer is a frequent collaborator with Lowery, having previously scored ‘Saints,’ and last year’s wonderful “Pete’s Dragon.” Now he’s back for “A Ghost Story,” and he’s once again provided some stirring accompaniment to Lowery’s work, and today we’re exclusively debuting “Safe Safe Safe” from the soundtrack.
“‘Safe, Safe, Safe’ is the final piece of music in the film, and takes its name from the Virginia Woolf short story ‘A Haunted House.’ David’s only request of me for this piece was that it have some kind of electronic drums in it, because, for him, they were comforting and reassuring in some way,” Hart said. “So I started with an 808 to see where it got me. I brought back one of the themes from an earlier piece in the film (‘The Secret In The Wall’) and ended ‘Safe, Safe, Safe’ with an extremely slowed-down version of the synths, strings, and guitars from ‘I Get Overwhelmed,’ which pop up in various places throughout the score.”
It’s a wonderful highlight from the soundtrack, which will arrive on CD and digital on July 7th via Milan Records, the same day “A Ghost Story” opens. The vinyl will be available on July 14th.
