Got a Tip?

First Color Image From ‘Logan’ Revealed, James Mangold Says Film Is Not “A City-Block Destroying CG F*ckathon”

We’ve had no shortage of superhero movies this year, and most of them — “X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” “Suicide Squad,” “Doctor Strange” — traded in some kind of massive destruction. Sure, Zack Snyder tried to skirt the criticisms of “Man Of Steel” by placing the climatic action of ‘Dawn Of Justice’ in an “abandoned” part of the city, while “Doctor Strange” literally reversed the damage that was done, but nonetheless, the requirement that some kind of large-scale mayhem needs to happen is still a big part of the screenwriter’s handbook. However, there’s at least one superhero movie coming next year that won’t be doing any of that: “Logan.”

Last month, director James Mangold tweeted the second page of the script, and in it was a guideline of sorts for the approach to the movie, and in short, it’s not going to be like every other Marvel or DC movie that comes along every few months. Here’s what he wrote:

Now might be a good time to talk about the ‘fights’ described in the next 100 or so pages. Basically, if you’re on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG fuckathon, this ain’t your movie.

In this flick, people will get hurt or killed when shit falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy like, say, a car. Should anyone in our story have the misfortune to fall off a roof or out a window, they won’t bounce. They will die.

As for our hero, well, he’s older now and it’s clear his abilities aren’t what they once were. He’s fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain — hence booze as a painkiller.

I dunno about you, but that sounds pretty damn great, and Hugh Jackman hopes we see Wolverine in a different light in this film, telling Empire, “It’s essential you see this as the story of a man who is struggling with mortality and legacy, and whether the world has been better off with him or without him.”

“Logan” opens on March 3, 2017, and the first color look at the boozed-up hero has landed.
