In the midst of summer’s onslaught of blockbusters there will be an oasis, taking the cinematic shape of Sofia Coppola‘s “The Beguiled.” And the director’s highly anticipated film, her first feature since 2013’s “The Bling Ring,” brings with it a lot of promise.
Based on the book by Thomas Cullinan, which was previously made into a film by Clint Eastwood, the filmmaker brings together Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning for this story set in a girls’ school in the state of Virginia in 1864. As the Civil War rages, The Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies has been sheltered from the outside world — until the day a wounded Union soldier is discovered nearby and taken in.
We’re in, hook, line and sinker. “The Beguiled” opens on June 22nd. [EW]
