It’s a new year, which means a whole new wave of original Netflix productions are getting ready to be unleashed, and while the streaming powerhouse hasn’t quite made the same awards season dent as their rivals at Amazon, they’re also playing a different game. Netflix’s first concern is getting movies onto their platform as soon as possible for the convenience of their customer base, which means something like “The Discovery” likely won’t be playing on a big screen near you, despite having the kind of talent traditional studios would kill for.
Starring Jason Segel, Rooney Mara, Robert Redford, Jesse Plemons, Riley Keough and Ron Canada, and directed by Charlie McDowell (“The One I Love“), the film is a love story set in a world where the afterlife has been scientifically proven, and as a result millions of people start taking their own lives to “get there.” Intriguing stuff, though we were sold on this from the cast alone.
“The Discovery” lands on Netflix on March 31st, and premieres at the Sundance Film Festival. [The Independent]
