It seems John Boyega can’t turn around in a movie without fighting creatures from another world. He broke out battling aliens in “Attack The Block,” faced the Dark Side in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and he’s set to square off against more fearsome foes, but this time it will be in a different franchise.

Legendary Pictures has announced that John Boyega has joined “Pacific Rim 2,” and will take on a producer role as well. Also known as “Pacific Rim: Maelstrom” (though that title doesn’t seem official yet), there are no plot details at the moment, but Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba‘s character. Guillermo del Toro has vacated the director’s chair for the second movie in the franchise, serving as producer instead, with Steven S. DeKnight (writer, producer and director on “Daredevil” season one) making his feature film debut.
No release date yet for “Pacific Rim 2,” but Universal had better hope that audience apathy for sequels they didn’t really want doesn’t continue….
