'Lethal Weapon 5': Mel Gibson Confirms The Film Is Still Happening & He'll Direct It

For years now, we’ve been hearing that a “Lethal Weapon 5” was happening. But when filmmaker Richard Donner passed away, folks seemed to believe that perhaps the film would never happen, especially as the two leads have aged. Well, Mel Gibson is here to tell you that it is still happening.

Speaking on the Inspire Me podcast, Mel Gibson shed some light on what the current status is for “Lethal Weapon 5.” The film, apparently, is happening, and Gibson will play double-duty as filmmaker and star to bring it to life.

“I’m going to direct the fifth film in the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series,” said Gibson. “You know, Richard Donner who did the other four sadly passed away and he was a good friend. He kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on this one so it’ll be an honor for me to do that.”

He added,  “[The film is] funny, but it’s pretty serious too. It tackles a couple of hard issues. I’m looking forward to it.”

It’s been 26 years since we had a “Lethal Weapon” film. So, needless to say, there are still some questions about whether or not it needs to happen. Perhaps, the buddy cop film franchise just needs to stay away, especially considering Donner’s passing. (Let’s not even begin to discuss the controversies that have followed Gibson over that time.)

Even with Gibson confirming it’ll happen, there’s still no real timetable for when we might see a “Lethal Weapon 5” happen. Gibson is currently 68 and his co-star, Danny Glover, is 77. So if it’s going to happen with those guys returning, then it needs to get in front of cameras sooner rather than later.
