Live-Action 'Voltron' Is Ready To Form At Universal

Among the many pieces of IP that Hollywood has been trying to big the screen, “Voltron,” of all things, has been one of the toughest nuts to crack. Stuck in development hell for at least a decade if not longer, it’s one of those projects that rears its head every couple of years only to disappear again. So before you exclaim, “Childhood ruined!” just bear in mind this thing has been moving along for years, you just might not have known about it.

Over the summer, Universal acquired DreamWorks Animations and their filing cabinets full of projects, one of them being a live-action “Voltron” movie, and they’ve decided it’s worth giving a whirl. David Hayter (“X-Men,” “Watchmen”) will be writing the script and that’s about all the details there are at the moment (“Voltron” has never moved along far enough in its history to get a director or cast attached).

It’s pretty easy to see why Universal might want to give this a go, as they’re probably thinking it could play in the same space as Paramount’s hugely successful “Transformers,” and perhaps offer a more four-quadrant friendly option to “Pacific Rim.” But we’ll see how far this gets. However, if you’re really hankering for some new “Voltron” in your life, the second season of the animated series “Voltron: Legendary Defender” is coming to Netflix in January. [Deadline]
