Marc Webb‘s career has certainly taken some interesting turns. After breaking out with “(500) Days Of Summer,” the filmmaker leaped to the blockbuster world with “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” The results weren’t so hot, the franchise was rebooted with this summer’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and Webb returned to the indie world knocking out “Gifted” (which quietly earned an impressive $37 million worldwide off a $7 million budget) and “The Only Living Boy In New York” (which received terrible reviews, and even worse box office). Let’s just say consistency has been all over the place, which makes us both interested and wary about his next venture.

Marc Webb is attached to direct “This Above All,” a drama about the controversial Westboro Baptist Church. Nick Hornby (“Brooklyn,” “Wild“) will pen the screenplay, based on the memoir by former member Megan Phelps-Roper, the granddaughter of founder Fred Phelps, who became one of the most powerful voices on social media for Westboro, where she used both a picket sign and her Twitter handle to doggedly protest everything from cultural events to funerals, until her ongoing conversations with opponents over Twitter led her to question her belief system. With her mind open to a different way of seeing the world, she and her younger sister made the difficult decision to leave the Church—and be disowned by their family—in order to find a life governed by love.
It’s a powerful, fascinating and charged story, so we really hope this one turns out well. No word yet on when production begins, but it looks like the creative pieces are coming together.
