When Marvel hired Taika Waititi to direct “Thor: Ragnarok,” it was a pretty clear indication the studio was looking for something perhaps a bit more lighthearted and quirky than the previous two films in the series, directed by Kenneth Branagh and Alan Taylor. Certainly, expectations are that the guy behind the vampire comedy “What We Do In The Shadows” and the terrific coming-of-age flick “The Hunt For The Wilderpeople” will bring a different vibe to the latest adventures of Thor, and it’s a notion Waititi himself embraces.
“I think this is the most different Marvel movie to date and one of the biggest,” he told Polygon about the movie this summer, though he kept details to the chest.

“It’s hard to say what the movie is because it’s changing,” he explained. “The plot has changed and the script has changed. There are buddy elements to it between Thor and the Hulk, but who knows what the final movie will look like.”
Well, with cameras now rolling, we do have a better idea of what the tone might be as The Wrap reveals that Devo member Mark Mothersbaugh will be scoring the picture. While these descriptors don’t do the composer justice, Mothersbaugh is generally known for his quirky and lush work, memorably scoring Wes Anderson‘s “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tenenbaums,” and recently giving “The Lego Movie” an energetic sheen. And while Marvel sized blockbusters aren’t generally his domain, we’re very excited to see what Mothersbaugh comes up with here.
