Marvel Animation: Colman Domingo Joins ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,’ ‘What…If?’ To End After Season 3 & More [D23]

Marvel Animation’s D23 panel today in Anaheim, California, was far more subdued than Marvel’s live-action panel last night, which showed off trailers for “Daredevil: Born Again,” “Ironheart,” and “Agatha All Along.” Nonetheless, while short on news, trailers, or concrete release dates, the Marvel Animation panel did provide some updates.

The biggest of them all, arguably, was the news that season 3 of “What…If? Will be the final season and “the final arch of The Watcher’s Multiverse-spanning story,” series director Bryan Andrews said. One major highlight was the reveal that Oscar Issac’s Moon Knight would be featured in season three, with the actor voicing the character again.

“What If…?” season three will also feature the MCU characters Ironheart, Shang-Chi, Katy, White Vision, Mega Hulk, Wanda Maximoff, and Sorcerer Supreme Wong, but it was unclear if the original actors would return to voice those characters

Eyes Of Wakanda” was next, and during the panel, the series was described as being a four-part event series. Producer Ryan Coogler and director/executive producer Todd Harris were on stage to discuss the project and explained that the show would “expand the mythos” of the country and be set in different periods of time, suggesting something of a four-part anthology show and different stories set in different periods of Wakanda’s history. Coogler said the series will also feature a group called the War Dogs tasked with protecting Wakanda. Additionally, Iron Fist, or one of the Iron Fist characters, will appear in the show.

“Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” had some sizable casting news to share. Series creator and head writer Jeff Trammell gave some details on the show, and during the panel, it was revealed that “Euphoria” actor Colman Domingo would voice the role of Norman Osbourne, aka the character that eventually becomes the Green Goblin.

Colman said what drew him to the role was playing “the ultimate villain” and also the challenge of following “into the footsteps of Willem Dafoe,” who played Osborn in Sam Raimi’s live-action “Spider-Man” trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.

“Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” will feature Doctor Strange, a Venom symbiote, Iron Man, Daredevil and a teaser shown in the room in this alt-universe version of Spider-Man Peter Parker is bit by a radioactive spider because of Doctor Strange, who chases a symbiote into a portal and comes back unintentionally with a Spider.

Trammel explained that the Osborn/Parker relationship would mirror Parker and Tony Stark’s dynamic in the MCU as mentor and protegee, but eventually, presumably, it turns darker.

Finally, the second season of “X-Men ‘97” was teased, too. Marvel exec Brad Winderbaum explained that the X-Men will wear Grant Morrison-style suits in the second season of the series, and new characters like Adam Warlock, Polaris, Apocalypse, Havok, and Danger will be introduced.

Lastly, “Marvel Zombies” made an appearance, too, but not much was revealed that is already known. The series will be a four-part event, rated TV-MA for mature audiences, suggesting a much darker tone.

Much to the chagrin of most fans, no trailer, release dates, or even vague release months were given for any of these projects. So while Marvel initially said “Eyes Of Wakanda,” “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” and “What… If?” season three would all arrive in 2024, it’s unclear if that’s still the case.  Watch some clips from the event below.
