Right now, all the talk surrounding actor Benedict Cumberbatch is about the upcoming Marvel film, “Doctor Strange.” But after he hangs up the flowy red cape, he’s going to film “The Current War,” and now we know who he’s going to war with. Michael Shannon is in talks to star in the period film opposite Cumberbatch.
“The Current War” tells the story of the famous feud between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse. The film takes place in the late 1800s as Edison pushes for the use of direct current (DC) and Westinghouse, along with other European companies, fights for the use of alternating current (AC). And it looks like Shannon will be replacing his “Nocturnal Animals” co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, who was attached to the project last fall. Frankly, we’d watch this movie with either of them in it.
Penned by Michael Mitnick (“The Giver,” “Vinyl“), The Weinstein Company is financing and releasing the film, which will directed by “Me And Earl And The Dying Girl’s” Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. No start date has been announced just yet, but I’d guess TWC want this one ready for the awards season next year. [THR]
