Nicolas Cage To Star In Action Thriller ‘Mandy’

When we pulled together our list of the 25 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century So Far a couple years back, one film that managed make the cut was Panos Cosmatos‘ “Beyond The Black Rainbow.” The moody, atmospheric, visually impressive picture was designed for a midnight audience, and it has certainly earned its share of cult admirers. Now, the filmmaker is gearing up an action movie with an interesting lead actor.

Nicolas Cage has signed up to star in “Mandy.” The ’80s-set movie features a plot that sounds like a Mad Libs of every low-rent movie Cage has done lately, centering on Red Miller, who takes aim at a religious sect (shades of “The Wicker Man“?) who killed his one true love. However, the picture clearly has some grand ambitions, as none other than celebrated composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (“Arrival,” “Sicario“) will be scoring the film. Huh.

“Mandy” will get in front of cameras this summer, shooting in Belgium. We’re not going to get too excited given Cage’s track record lately, but we are looking at this with some cautious optimism. [Deadline]
