Nicolas Winding Refn’s “The Neon Demon” is one of our most anticipated films of 2016. And it’s a film that’ll hopefully earn him some redemption, even if it looks as polarizing as ever. Refn’s last picture, the visceral, moody and bloody, “Only God Forgives” had a very divided reaction at Cannes with many critics hating it and a smaller, but very loud contingent that loved it. And so Refn’s back on the Croisette this year with “The Neon Demon,” which is a thriller/horror set in the world of L.A. fashion.

Starring Elle Fanning, it’s about an aspiring model that moves to Los Angeles and once there, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has. Sounds like Refn’s possibly not-to-subtle take on the spiritual emptiness of Los Angeles, but let’s hope it’s something more.
Due to come out via Amazon Studios, who are aggressively bringing cutting-edge auteurs to their streaming service, the film is now officially dated to open on June 24th . The movie faces off another Amazon picture, Todd Solondz’s “Wiener-Dog,” A24’s “Swiss Army Man” and STX’s “The Free State of Jones” (“Independence Day 2” also comes out that weekend, but lets assume that’s a totally different audience). The former conflicting date may seem odd, but Amazon’s real end game is streaming so perhaps two movies from the same parent company playing head to head in theaters isn’t a big deal. Plus, “Wiener-Dog” is being distributed by IFC Films and “The Neon Demon”— well, they haven’t said who the theatrical distributor is yet (possibly Roadside Attractions who has partnered with Amazon often thus far).
“The Neon Demon,” runs 1 hour and 57 minutes (according to the Cannes production notes) and will premiere at the fest soon. Even more, a handful of new photos have been released as well as an Instagram video from Fanning’s Vogue video shoot. And by the way, the French get the film a little early on June 8th.
