Trump’s America starts today, and many are still grappling with the very real fear and anxiety about what the next four years might hold. But it’s heartening to know that people are mobilizing, with multiple protests and marches planned in the days and weeks ahead. And Shia LaBeouf is putting his own touch on the various acts of resistance that will unfold in all corners of the country.
The actor and artist has launched a new installation with the very clear title, He Will Not Divide Us. Those five words are painted on the side of the Museum Of The Moving Image in New York City, where visitors are invited to stand and repeat the phrase, while a camera captures it and live-streams it to the world. For four years. Here’s the breakdown from the official website:
Commencing at 9am on January 20, 2017, the day of the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States, the public is invited to deliver the words “HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US” into a camera mounted on a wall outside the Museum of the Moving Image, New York, repeating the phrase as many times, and for as long as they wish.
Open to all, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the participatory performance will be live-streamed continuously for four years, or the duration of the presidency. In this way, the mantra “HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US” acts as a show of resistance or insistence, opposition or optimism, guided by the spirit of each individual participant and the community.
