Got a Tip?

10 TV Shows To Watch In July: ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘The Boys,’ ‘Veronica Mars’ & More

The Boys
What You Need to Know: Are we convinced that Seth Rogen sleeps? Each week it seems there’s a new announcement about a project he’s involved in, from this years co-starring role in “The Long Shot” to the final season of “Preacher” and release of “Good Boys,” both of which he had a hand in producing. Now there’s “The Boys,” a series he’s helped create, which follows a group of vigilantes tasked to taking down superheroes who abuse their powers. It’s yet another dark take on the superhero genre, one that we weren’t too fond of. Our critic called it out for it’s tonal imbalance, writing it’s biggest downfall is “…mistaking nastiness for edginess and thinking that simply showing more women on screen is progress.”

Orange Is the New Black
What You Need To Know:  Our favorite Netflix jailbirds return for the final season of “Orange Is The New Black.” Series title character Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling is finally out jail. The biggest question in this final season is how does one acclimate to life on the outside after being locked up for so long? The seventh and final season is expected to tie up lots of loose ends and it would be nice to see some of the inmates of Litchfield find some semblance of a happy ending.  Series regulars are all expected to return including Dascha Polanco, Laura Prepon and Natasha Lyonne who  returned to the series following the success of her own Netflix show “Russian Doll.”  To see how Piper adapts to life on the outside as well as how the girls on the inside adapt to life without her, make sure you tune in at the end of this month.
Release Date: Seventh and final season premieres July 26 on Netflix

Veronica Mars
What You Need to Know: The beloved but short-lived television series starting Kristen Bell as sleuth extraordinaire Veronica Mars returns this summer. Even though the show is now returning to the small screen, a movie version of the series was released in 2014 and in a rare feat, was completely funded by the show’s devoted fans. Needless to say, with loyal fans in every corner of the world, this series is marked for an explosive return when it premieres on Hulu this month. This season is considered the series’ fourth season and will continue from where the show (and film) left off. In addition, some past characters are slated to return and naturally new characters will be introduced. For those thrilled at the prospect for more “Veronica Mars,” be sure to check out the season premiere on Hulu this month!

Pennyworth
What You Need to Know: Really, it was only a matter of time before the TV executives, floundering for more (always more) superhero content, set their gaze on Batman’s put upon butler and though, “Hey, why the hell not?” Yes, we’re getting the young Alfred Pennyworth origin story and, with most of the new superhero shows generating mainly apathy these days, we can’t say we’re totally on board. However, anything in the Batman canon has the possibility of being something intriguing, with enough film noir energy to fuel a series that at least doesn’t feel or look like its contemporaries.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres July 28th on Epix

Four Weddings and a Funeral
What You Need To Know:  The beloved film is resurrected as a limited series on Hulu, co-created and executive produced by Mindy Kaling.  The original romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell was released in 1994 to rave reviews.  As you might expect from a series from Kaling, this version of “Four Weddings and a Funeral” greatly expands the diversity of the cast. The series will feature “Game of Thrones” actress Nathalie Emmanuel in her first comedic role, alongside Zoe Boyle, Guz Khan, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Nikesh Patel.  This timeless story of romance will be revitalized for new audiences and will not be your typical romantic comedy.
Release Date:  Miniseries premieres July 31 on Hulu
