Ok, the Academy has spoken. On Friday the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science announced that 114 original scores from eligible 2014 feature-length motion pictures are in contention for nominations in for the 87th Oscars. One composer you may possibly see nominated more than once? Alexandre Desplat, who has five eligible scores in competition, including “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game” and "Unbroken."
You’ve hopefully seen our Best Scores of the Year feature and there are a lot of those picks in this group, including Alex Ebert score for "A Most Violent Year," Hans Zimmer’s celestial “Interstellar” score, Mica Levi’s atonal work on “Under the Skin,” the creepy and textured "Gone Girl" music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and thankfully, Jonny Greenwood’s “Inherent Vice” (you’ll recall his “There Will Be Blood” score was rendered ineligible in 2007 over technicalities).
In the end, however, there are only six of our fifteen picks represented here. Perhaps the biggest snubs from the AMPAS is Antonio Sanchez comedic drum score from "Birdman" and Justin Hurwitz jazz/drum score for “Whiplash.” Remember, only five composers and their scores will make the cut from this long list.

Eligible songs list on page 2.79 Original songs will vie for the 2014 Oscars and it’s an eclectic mix. Lorde is eligible for her "Hunger Games" track, so is Lana Del Rey for her "Big Eyes" song, actor/songwriter Billy Boyd for his "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" ode, and Coldplay for their closing-credits song featured in "Unbroken."
Other pleasant surprises include Tegan and Sara‘s "Everything Is Awesome" from "The LEGO Movie" (performed with and The Lonely Island, which we pray makes the final five), and two songs co-written by Ethan Hawke for "Boyhood" have made the cut: "Split The Difference" (co-written with Charlie Sexton) and "Ryan’s Song" (written by Hawke, performed by Hawke, Ellar Coltrane, Lorelei Linklater, and Jennifer Tooley). THR says "Summer Noon"—written by and performed by Jeff Tweedy is eligible—but it’s actually nowhere on the AMPAS final list. That’s ok, two of the songs he wrote for "St. Vincent"—“Everybody Hides” and the laid-back “Why, Why, Why”—made the cut.
Bon Iver and The Shins each have a song eligible a piece for Zach Braff‘s "Wish I Was Here" and John Legend and Common‘s "Glory" track from "Selma" is also in contention. It’s pretty amazing to see Yasmine Hamdan‘s "Hal" from ”Only Lovers Left Alive” also in the mix.
